Freedom for artistes needed: Azhikode

Thrissur: Writer and social activist Sukumar Azhikode has said that freedom for artistes matters most in the world of culture.

He was addressing the switch-on ceremony of Being Karna, a two-hour documentary on Kalamandalam Gopi, at the Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University for Art and Culture at Cheruthuruthy on Monday.

Art and culture grows only through the freedom enjoyed by artistes, he added.

He spoke about Kalamandalam Gopis contribution to Kathakali. Meena Das Narayan, director of the documentary, said her work would draw parallels between Kalamadalam Gopis life and the story of Karna, which he had portrayed to perfection on the Kathakali platform.

Karna struggled early in his life. Gopi Asan reached the top braving hardship, she added.

The documentary will be shot in Kalamandalam, Kothachira, Guruvayur and Thrissur.

Kalamandalam Gopi, Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University for Art and Culture Vice-Chancellor K. G. Poulose, Registrar N. R. Gramaprakash and Lalitha Das were present.
