KOLLAM: V Rajendra Babu of the CPM will be the new mayor of Kollam Corporation. Babu replaces N Padmalochanan, who resigned from the post following the controversy over attending a function of the RSS.
In the elections held here Tuesday, Babu defeated George D Kattil of the Congress by 19 votes.
Babu, an advocate by profession was the leader of the SFI. He was also elected chairman of the Kerala University Union. He represents the Uliyacoil East Division in the council and is the chairman of the standing committee on tax. Babu received 34 votes and Kattil 15.
Meantime, a member of the LDF voted for a congress representative. The votes of two RSP members turned invalid.
