Mohanlal speaks against Thilakan by supporting Mammootty

Superstar Mohanlal has finally broken the silence that the Big M's had maintained for the last few weeks regarding the controversy raised by actor Thilakan. Mohanlal, while interacting with a prominent daily yesterday said that Megastar Mammootty's silence in the Thilakan issue should not be mistaken as cowardice. Mammootty is maintaining a silence merely because of the respect that the industry has towards Thilakan as a senior actor. Mohanlal also said that Mammootty would never snatch a role from Thilakan, and added that most people in the industry have had first hand experience regarding Mammootty's goodness. He said that if there was an attempt to isolate Mammootty, he would strongly oppose it. It was not on Mammootty's behest that AMMA issued a notice to Thilakan. On the other hand it was because Thilakan had repeatedly caused injury to the association's reputation. Mohanlal affirmed that attempts to break up AMMA would be sternly dealt with. He also spoke in support of the fans' associations, when he said that it was not right to blame the fans' association for some anonymous phone call that someone receives.

South Indian actress Asin makes her comeback in Kollywood with Vijay’s remake of Malayalam movie ‘Bodyguard’. As known earlier, the Malayalam film featured Dileep and Nayanthara in lead roles. With the film turning to be hit at box office, Vijay couldn’t refuse the offer of Siddhique for remaking this film. Earlier, producer R.B. Choudary of Super Good Films was supposed to produce the film, but seems like there has been a change in plans. Now Sivaraju Venkatraju of Geetha Chitra International, who has previously produced Vijay’s Priymanavale in 2000, is going to produce the film. It’s worth mentioning here that Vijay and Siddhique have earlier delivered a mind-boggling family entertainer ‘Friends’, which is considered as all-time favorite of film buffs. Vijay and Asin have already worked together in a couple of blockbusters– Sivakasi and Pokkiri.

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve opened in Kerala

Union minister of state for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh has inaugurated the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve at Anappadi in Kerala's Palakkad district on Friday.

Situated at the Sungam range of hills between the Anaimalai Hills and Nelliampathy Hills, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is the 38th Tiger Reserve of India and second of Kerala.

Earlier known by the name of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, the reserve contains around 20 Tigers besides being an abode for 51 species of Reptiles, 204 species of birds, 160 varieties of butterflies and other species.

In his address, Ramesh showed concern over the dwindling Tiger population of the country that is facing threat from poaching, mining and operation by real estate mafia.

"The extinction of Tigers is because there is a real-estate mafia, mining mafia and there is a crime syndication which wants to finish-off all Tigers and lay claim to the forest land and that is the real danger. The danger is not just to Tigers but it is to the forest land itself," he said.

He said the Central government would pay Rs2 crore annually to each tiger reserve.

"It would also meet the expenses incurred for relocating people from the core area.

Nearly one lakh families were living in the core areas of tiger reserves and 3,000 families relocated. The Centre would pay Rs10 lakh each to the family willing to relocate. There was no compulsion to move out," he added.

In India, the tiger population has dwindled to about 1,400, which is 60% fewer than in 2002. Some 40,000 tigers were thought to be in India at the start of the 20th century, but now an estimated one tiger per day is dying.

Minister Balan reiterates conspiracy charge

Minister Balan reiterates conspiracy charge
T’PURAM: Kerala Electricity Minister A K Balan Saturday termed as `unfortunate' Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh's statement that the proposed Athirappally hydel project in Thrissur could not be given clearance.

Reiterating his charge that Ramesh's statement was part of a `conspiracy' to sabotage the project, he told reporters here that it came at a time when the matter was still before the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Centre.

The committee was formed after Kerala State Electricity Board replied to a notice from the Environment Ministry providing details about the project. With Ramesh's Friday's remarks, the committee could not now take an independent stand on the issue and would be "ineffectual", Balan claimed.

He said the proposed 163 MW project had been given clearance by Environment Ministry thrice--in 1998, 2005 and 2007, after the respective expert panels approved the project.

"No new environmental threat has been pointed out and there is no reason to deny clearance now," he said.

Kerala Government always addressed environmental issues in a positive way, he said and claimed only a `small minority' was opposing the Athirappally project.

It was unfortunate on the part of the Union Minister to come out with `misleading statements on a project approved by local people,' Balan said.

Dismissing Balan's charge of `conspiracy', Ramesh had Friday said the state bio-diversity board listed the project's adverse impact on environment. Besides, the district panchayat and various environmental groups have opposed the project on environmental grounds, he had said.

The Kerala government should not politicise the Mullaperiyar dam issue

The Kerala government should not politicise the Mullaperiyar dam issue, but work towards protecting the interests of the public, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA said Saturday.

The then UDF government called an all party meet and disucssed the matter without giving political colour to it. A dam security authority was formed by convening a special legislative assembly session, he said.

He urged the LDF government to submit a favourable report before the Apex court appointed committee and said the security of people be protected and water released to Tamil Nadu, as per the agreement.

On the statement of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, that government would implement a "second land reform", the MLA said the Chief Minister should fulfil his promise.

He blamed the government for not taking a favourable approach over the encroachment issue.

University employee’s suspension evokes protests

The suspension of a University of Calicut employee for writing a letter to a National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer team that inspected the campus recently has evoked wide protests.

The university authorities, on Friday, told the staff members who complained to Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi against the suspension of P. Krishna Kumar that the institution would not brook indiscipline.

U.V. Rajagopal, general secretary of the Calicut University Staff Organisation, said similar letters exposing the university would be sent to all higher authorities. A meeting of the Syndicate held on Thursday decided to suspend Mr. Krishna Kumar as it found him guilty of “making scandalous and wild allegations with imputations and motive against the University in general and its statutory officers in particular.”

Indian students doing well in CIE

The acceptance of the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) in India is growing 40 to 50 per cent a year, says Ian Chambers, Regional Manager (South Asia) of CIE. CIE is a provider of international qualifications for 14-19 year olds.

Therefore, Cambridge offers a range of qualifications and programmes for students aged five to 19. These include Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level, Cambridge International A and AS Level, and the new Cambridge International Primary programme.

SriLankan Airlines has geared up to change the travel experience of its customers

SriLankan Airlines has geared up to change the travel experience of its customers in a multi-dimensional manner.

As part of “Change in the way you fly,'' the airline's front line staff from cabin to ground crew will sport a brand new look and a warmer smile. But the charm, elegance and grace of the Monara (peacock) will be preserved as hundreds of stewardesses undergo this transformation.

The new colour palette in the iconic Kandyan sari plays with the soft hues of sea blue splashed with the delicate multi-hued motifs of the peacock feather with its iridescent bursts of electric orange mottled with dark, light blue and white.
The airline's onboard kitchen has turned a new chapter in its in-flight meal service. It offers a tempting array of mouth watering signature dishes and cocktails. The passengers have the added choice of ordering from a new a la carte menu and having their meals literally cooked on board.

A whole new experience in in-flight entertainment also awaits movie buffs.

The airline's flight kitchen led by a team of chefs from the Hot and Cold Kitchens, Bakery, and Confectionery headed by production manager Sudhish Kumar Pande and executive chef Anthony Gibson has designed menus to pamper the palate and titillate the taste buds beyond imagination. The humble ‘Pol Roti' has been redefined and given a new lease of life.

Kerala will lose Rs.20 crore of revenue envisaged in the Budget

Kerala will lose Rs.20 crore of revenue envisaged in the Budget for the current year owing to the failure of the government in revising the rents on revenue and forest leases.

Various plantations and others holding lands leased from the government paid only nominal rent for years though the Assembly had passed a Bill to revise the rent as way back as 1980. The rents ranged from Rs.1.50 an acre to Rs.5 an acre for most of the land leased out by the erstwhile Travancore and Cochin governments, and up to Rs.250 in cases where the leases had been renewed.

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac had proposed a formula to determine the revised rent: Rs.1,300 for lease exceeding 100 acre; Rs.1,000 for lease of 25 to 100 acres; and Rs.750 for lease below 25 acres.

However, this was not implemented. Instead, the Forest Department issued a notification in November last amending the rules notified under the Kerala Grants and Leases (Modification of Rights) Act. (The Department had initially shelved its plans to issue the notification on the ground that the Finance Department would issue necessary notification. The Forest Department’s notification will not cover all the revenue leases.)

‘kuthiyottam' at the ‘kalari' in Aranmula

The ‘Kuthiyotta-kalari' in the legendary land of Thottathumannil in Aranmula is turning out to be major religious event in Central Travancore. ‘Kuthiyottam' is associated with the ritualistic dance at the Kumbha Bharani festival at Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, near Mavelikara in Alappuzha district. This is the first time that a kalari of `kuthiyottam' is being organised in Aranmula.

The ‘kuthiyotta-kalari' has been organised on the ancestral property of the Thottathumannil Nair family at Aranmula from where the wooden idol of the Chettikulangara temple had its genesis a century ago.

Capt. T.K. Raveendran Nair of Aranmula who is offering a twin ‘kuthiyottam' at Chettikulangara Devi Temple this year told The Hindu that the idol used for the ‘Chaanthaattom' vazhipadu at the temple was carved out of a special variety of jack tree that stood on his ancestral property near Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple a century ago.

‘Kuthiyottam,' which has its custom and tradition rooted in human sacrifice (‘Narabali'), involves adoption of a boy child by the devotee who gives him as ‘vazhipadu' (offering) to the deity at Chettikulangara on Bharani asterism in the Malayalam month of Kumbhom.

The marina house to be commissioned in May

The country's first full-fledged marina that is getting ready on the eastern side of Bolghatty Island would be commissioned in May.

The Rs. 6-crore facility being built using tourism funds of the Centre and the State would berth 35 yachts in the first phase. It was scheduled for completion last year. A marina house is almost ready on an acre of land owned by the KTDC, while the berthing facility would come up on 1.5 acres in the adjacent backwaters. Even without a marina, 16 yachts from foreign lands are currently anchored across the waterbody. Their number was the highest in 2008, when 40 yachts called at Kochi – the port city in India that is nearest to the international sea route.

The three-storeyed marina house resembles the Dutch palace that was later converted into the Bolghatty Palace Hotel, full with wooden beams, panelling and chandeliers with antique finish. A Customs office would be housed in a room in the building, so that seafarers can directly check into the marina. They now have to wait in the outer sea for a day or two to obtain Customs clearance and other formalities, where many of them are forced to buy goods sold by unscrupulous boatmen.

“The marina house would have 20 double rooms and four suites, some facing the marina and the others the golf course on the western side,” said Jaibee Kollarmalil, the hotel's manager.

Thilakan yesterday said the Malayalam film industry was in a deep crisis

Thilakan yesterday said the Malayalam film industry was in a deep crisis after major film organisations decided to boycott him. The Film Employees’ Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), of which all leading directors and technicians are members, yesterday decided not to ‘co-operate’ with the actor unless he withdraws ‘derogatory’ statements against it and apologise. Earlier in the day, Thilakan released a letter containing reply to last week’s show-cause notice issued by the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) in which he refused to apologise for his unsavoury comments against superstar Mammootty and other film personalities. He alleged the AMMA had not come to his help when he was dropped from the film Christian Brothers after he was signed and given an advance payment.

“It did not come to my defence when fans of a superstar unleashed the propaganda that I had gone mad and threatened to kill me,” the actor said. “It’s clear that AMMA’s sympathy lies with a select few, whose interests are paramount to the organisation. Now let the people decide.” He said: “Nobody can predict what would happen tomorrow. This means this is the beginning of the end. It’s the death knell for the Malayalam film industry.” The 74-year-old veteran of 147 films received India’s fourth highest civilian honor Padma Shri last year. “With FEFKA too deciding not to co-operate with me, it signals the end of me as an actor because it is they who decide who should stand in front of the camera. The decision was on expected lines,” Thilakan said.

Thilakan files police complaint

Thilakan who has been served a show cause notice by a Malayalam film body asking him to apologise for his outburst against film personalities has filed a police complaint alleging he received a call threatening to kill him for “defaming Mammootty”. The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) issued Thilakan a notice asking him to apologise in a week’s time or face action. Speaking to IANS, Thilakan said he was at a restaurant in Alappuzha when he got a call from a UAE number. “Picking up the call I heard a rough voice asking if it is Thilakan, I said ‘Yes’, and then the person addressed me using bad words and said that since I am defaming Mammootty, in a week’s time I will be killed by a person called Thamanam Shaji. I said fine and disconnected the call,” said Thilakan. He said there were other people in the restaurant at the time. “I went to the Alappuzha South Station and registered a police complaint and demanded that I should get justice,” added Thilakan. On the notice served by AMMA, the actor said he is preparing a reply. “The letter says that if I don’t apologise, I will be ousted from AMMA. This is against the law. The matter has to first go to the disciplinary committee. Anyway, since I have done nothing wrong, the question of apologizing does not arise. All I did was to react when I was prevented from pursuing my profession,” said Thilakan. Thilakan has launched a protest against film organisations for denying him an opportunity to act in the new film “Christian Brothers”. He claimed he has been flooded with calls from people expressing their support. “I got a call from a person in Kottayam asking me if I am scared about the death threat, I said no. Then he said if a hired killer comes with a knife and stands in front of me, he won’t be able to do anything when he thinks of the strong characters I have played. What more applause do I need than statements like these from my well wishers,” asked the thespian.

S Sivaraman, former CPI-M MP from Ottappalam meets Chennithala, to join Congress

S Sivaraman, former CPI-M MP from Ottappalam who recently resigned from the party, Sunday met KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala here.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Chennithala said Sivaraman had expressed his desire to join Congress.

A decision on Sivaraman's entry to Congress would be taken after discussions with opposition leader Oommen Chandy, KPCC office-bearers and senior leaders, he said.

Sivaraman is the third ex-MP to resign from CPI-M during the last one year. A P Abdullakutty, who was the first to quit from CPI(M) citing differences with the party on the question of religious faith. He contested and won the by-poll in the Kannur assembly seat on a Congress ticket last year. K S Manoj, ex-MP from Alappuzha also quit the party recently on the issue of faith.

On the CPI(M)-sponsored land agitation in Wayanad district, Chennithala said if they continued to encroach upon estates in possession of private individuals, it would lead to anarchy and breakdown of law and order.

It appeared that Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and the state government had given silent approval for the anarchic stir by CPI-M men, Chennithala said.

He sought to know the views of other constituents of the ruling LDF on the encroachment by CPI-M workers in Wayanad.

While the Opposition UDF was not against deserving people getting land, it should not be at the cost of law and order in the state, Chennithala said.

Police suspect terror angle to call routing cases

The Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID) suspects a terror angle to several cases involving the routing of international calls through illegal voice over internet protocol (VoIP), a service that allows the transmission of voice through the Internet.

The police are investigating at least four cases in the city after the Vigilance Telecom Monitoring Cell, Chennai, detected that a grey market call centre had been functioning in the city since 2005. Some persons were arrested but the kingpins are at large, sources said.

The apparent loss to the Government of India and telecom operators amount to nearly Rs.1 crore. More than the monetary gains, the accused could have employed the technology for anti-national activities, sources told The Hindu here on Sunday. The illegal routing of international calls assumes significance in the light of emerging evidence that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba controllers had guided the team involved in the Mumbai terror attack in November 2008 through VoIP phones.

Usually, an international call comes with a local Calling Line Identification (CLI). But the grey market call has a ‘bad CLI’ or ‘no CLI’ at all.

Sources said illegal operators had used the services of private telecom providers in routing these international calls from various places including a building complex opposite the Kerala State Road Transport Cooperation (KSRTC) bus station on Mavoor Road.

It was found that the accused had used a broadband cable box linked to an optical fibre terminating box or ‘black box’ from which the optical fibre cable was extended using a media converter to an 8-port Ethernet switch. This Ethernet cable was finally traced to a nearby house that functioned as an illegal telecom system, sources said.

This illegally system had an Internet connection with 1024 kbps bandwidth of a private telecom service provider, a bridge converter, de-link 8-port Ethernet switch, personal computer and peripherals and a Quintum Technologies VoIP gateway imported from Singapore. Sources said one P.P. Abdul Gafoor and his brother Abdul Nazer are involved in more than two cases. One of the five accused, Shafeeq, involved the Mavoor illegal call routing case is reportedly in the in Gulf. Also, there are six accused in a call routing case traced to Valiyangadi. Six of the nine accused had been arrested by the police.

Likewise, four of the five accused had been arrested in a case traced to a building on the Railway Station Link Road, sources said.

Kuttiadi project to be ready by March

The 100 MW Kuttiadi additional extension power project will be ready for commissioning next month, Power Minister A.K. Balan has said.

In a release here on Sunday, the Minister said the 25 MW Neriamangalam extension and 3.75 MW Kuttiadi tail race schemes had been completed taking the total quantity of power added to the grid by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to 90 MW. The Pallivasal extension, Thottiyar and Poozhithod schemes, forming part of various schemes aimed at additional generation capacity of 730 MW, were at different stages of implementation, Mr. Balan said.

He said steps were being taken for a 2,400 MW mega power project at Cheemeni in Kasaragod district. Once the LNG terminal became a reality in Kochi, the 1,950 MW second stage of the Kayamkulam thermal power project would become a reality. Steps would also begin soon on a 1,000 MW project at Brahmapuram under the full ownership of the KSEB, the final goal being generation of around 3,000 MW power over the coming decade, he said.

The Minister said work on 206 sub-stations had been taken up as part of the Rs.1,800-crore transmission master plan.

Of these, 71 sub-stations had been commissioned and 11 kV lines drawn across a distance of 8,500 km. As many as 12,100 transformers had also been set up over the last three years. The pace of work done in transmission and distribution segment should be clear from the fact that as much as one-fourth of the total distance of 11 kV lines and the total number of transformers were put in place after the present government came to power.

It is being organised as part of Annam, a national food and agro-biodiversity festival. Environmental activist Vandana Shiva, who delivered the keynote address at the seminar, said the scientific community, which takes great pride in having invented the genetically modified (GM) crops, should also have the moral responsibility to categorically tell the people how safe such food variants are. “The onus is on the same scientific community to tell the people categorically that the GM crops would not negatively affect man or Earth,” she said. Shiva said mass production of any homogeneous crop would erode food security and threaten food safety. Only the preservation and promotion of heterogeneous food crops and vegetables would, in the long run, ensure food security of people, she said.

Opposition leaders visit encroached land in Wayanad

The top brass of the Congress-led opposition in Kerala Friday visited a piece of land that is occupied by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporters, along with activists of a tribal organisation, here.

The CPI-M and the Adivasi Skehma Sabha claim that the land belongs to the government and had been encroached upon by Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader George Potham, who is now aligned with the opposition.

The opposition team, led by Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy, included the top leaders of all the allies of the United Democratic Front (UDF).

The CPI-M had initially said the opposition delegation will not be allowed to come anywhere near the land.

With the opposition adamant, the leaders of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) mellowed down and when Chandy and his team arrived along with a huge security cordon of police officials, they were received by local CPI-M legislator K.C. Kunhiraman and the Wayanad CPI-M district secretary C.K. Saseendran.

Environmentalist hails decision on BT brinjal; slams MNCs

Noted environmental activist Vandana Shiva Thursday hailed the Center moratorium on commercial cultivation of BT Brinjal and said GM crops contained harmful elements that could throw open the future generations to complex diseases.

The future generation could suffer from complex diseases due to the harmful elements present in GM crops, she said. Lashing out at corporate and multinational giants, she said these firms were "thrusting" junk food habits on people, leading to complex diseases.

The increasing affinity towards fast food culture is part of "deliberate" efforts by MNCs in pursuit of capturing food processing sector by tending to spoil India’s biodiversity, she said on the sidelines of a food festival here.

Food processing units in India should be set up in rural areas to safeguard the rich bio-diversity in the interest of disease-free society in future. The "toxic and pesticide laced" food marketed in India would would spoil health of the future generations, she said.

The influx of edible soya and palm oil have adversely hit coconut cultivators in Kerala and the "misinformation" campaign against highly nutrient coconut oil was being made under pressure from the MNCs, she said.

The five-day ’Annam’ Food and Agro-biodiversity festival, organised by the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action in association with various government institutions, was formally inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas.

Houseboat ride becomes cheaper

India’s not-to-miss tourist experiences like a ride on the Palace on Wheels or stay at the Lake Palace are often beyond the means of most Indians, but the economic slowdown has brought at least one experience within the reach of the middle-class -- Kerala’s houseboats.

For long patronised by rich foreign tourists, the backwater cruise industry in Kerala has woken up to the benefits of winning domestic tourists who virtually kept it afloat when the waves of the global economic slowdown hit the Indian shores in 2008-end. An overnight cruise through the coconut lagoon - an experience that the National Geographic Traveler has ranked ahead of viewing the Taj Mahal - is now cheaper by at least 20 per cent, if not more, than the period preceding the slowdown.

"A single bedroom houseboat can be hired for as low as Rs 6,000 a day and the rates include all meals for a couple... there were days when the same ride would have cost Rs 10,000-15,000," says Kochumon alias Sanish, who captains ’Sandra’, a well-appointed two bed-room houseboat that in its earlier avatar as ’kettuvallam’ (rope-tied country boat) ferried rice and spices in the Kuttanad region, the state’s rice bowl.

Compared to this, a ride on the Palace on Wheels costs anywhere around Rs 2,00,000 per person per week.

"We are seeing a lot of interest from tourists from the north, especially Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and Haryana and rates are no longer prohibitive," said Anil James, a houseboat operator. A typical backwater cruise takes tourists on a 40-km journey through the Vembanad lake, India’s longest spread over 1,512 sq.km, with a stopover at night by idyllic fishing villages whose people and tourists alike shop from a floating market ’Triveni’ operated by Kerala Consumerfed.

Chennithala demanded that all encroached land should be taken back and handed over to the landless S Sivaraman ex-MP who resigned from Congress called upon Chennithala.
