The Kerala government should not politicise the Mullaperiyar dam issue

The Kerala government should not politicise the Mullaperiyar dam issue, but work towards protecting the interests of the public, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the Supreme Court verdict on the matter in 2006 was against Kerala's interests.

The then UDF government called an all party meet and disucssed the matter without giving political colour to it. A dam security authority was formed by convening a special legislative assembly session, he said.

He urged the LDF government to submit a favourable report before the Apex court appointed committee and said the security of people be protected and water released to Tamil Nadu, as per the agreement.

On the statement of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, that government would implement a "second land reform", the MLA said the Chief Minister should fulfil his promise.

He blamed the government for not taking a favourable approach over the encroachment issue.
