A modern fire-fighting vehicle has been commissioned at the Karipur International Airport. The Panther 6x6 fire-fighting vehicle is designed to ensure that airplane fires can be doused before it reaches the fuel tank.Rosenbauer, an Austrian firm that has designed the vehicle, claims it takes only two minutes to reach any segment of the runway and can achieve a speed of 80km/hr in 30 seconds.Panther's maximum speed is 120 km/hr and it can spray water even while running. The vehicle can carry 12,500 litres of water and can pump 7,000 litres of water in a minute.

The vehicle can accommodate a five-member crew and is also fitted with infra-red lights to work during fog cover or night. It can spray water up to a distance of 95 metres. The maintenance of the vehicle is being undertaken by the company itself. The Panther also follows all regulations imposed by the civil aviation authorities on airport safety and fire-fighting regulations, according to Rosenbauer.Besides being commissioned at important airports in the country, including Thiruvananthapuram, the airports in Tiruchirapalli, Mangalore and Guwahati are expected to get Panthers soon.
