Russian women swim to safety; Indian man drowns

Kochi, Mar 5 (PTI) Two Russian women swam to safety but an Indian man accompanying them drowned when their boat capzised in Periyar river in Idukki district, police said today.

Nadza (24) and Nadalia (27), hailing from St Petersburg and reportedly visiting Kerala for the first time, managed to swim ashore when the fibreglass boat capsized at Thattekad last Tuesday. However Nadeem (35), who was with them drowned, they said.

Police said the victims body was recovered from near the accident spot yesterday and were looking into all aspects of the probe.

The Russian women had necessary travel documents and had come to Kerala on their own, police said.

A case was registered against Kilikkoode resort at Kothamangalam where the women were staying. The owner was arrested for failing to inform them about the presence of foreigners at their resort.
