Rs.1,097-crore power charge arrears

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is yet to collect power charge arrears of Rs.1,096.55 crore due from consumers till March, Electricity Minister A.K. Balan has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Balan said the arrears due from government institutions came up to Rs.144.82 crore. The dues from the cooperative sector and public sector undertakings amounted to Rs.334.18 crore, local self-government institutions, Rs.12.6 crore and the private sector, Rs.542.58 crore. He said Kerala would become a power-surplus State next year.

The tariff would not be increased or load-shedding imposed.

The government was doubtful of the Centre granting clearance for the Athirappilly power project.

The government had decided to form a company of the Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) and local bodies for exploiting non-conventional energy sources.
