3 held for bid to sell govt-sponsored life jackets

KOCHI: A three-member gang was arrested here Friday for allegedly trying to sell life jackets, which were distributed in the tsunami affected areas of Tamil Nadu by the state government with Central assistance.

Police also seized 250 jackets and one Yamaha outboard engine valued at Rs 60,000 and a car used for transporting the goods to Kerala, Special Branch Assistant Commissioner Shamsu Illickal said here.

The arrested were identified as Mariadasan (43) and Stephen (38), both from Kanyakumari, and Ratheesh (29), the middleman in the racket, he said.

Police under the guise of purchasing the jackets had contacted Ratheesh and asked them to come to a specified place where the three were nabbed, he said
