Dowry-free village website launched

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ``The protest against Womens Reservation Bill must be seen as a campaign against social progress,�� Chief Minister V.S. Achutanandan said here on Monday.

He speaking after inaugurating the website www.

dowryfreevillage.com, an initiative of the Nilambur grama panchayat against dowry.

He said even though Kerala boasted of having high social indicators, it had failed to root out social evils like dowry.

Lauding the Nilbumar grama panchayat and the Kerala Mahila Samakya Society (KMSS) for their initiatives to spread anti-dowry measures, he said: ``The decision to work against dowry in a place where it was prevalent should be appreciated.

Dowry is actually commercialising marriage,�� he said.

Nilambur panchayat president Aryadan Showkat said that a mass marriage ceremony was planned to be held by this month-end to propagate the message of dowry-free marriages.

KMSS, with the support of Nilambur panchayat, is organising a series of campaigns against dowry, child marriages and ostentatious marriages.

G. Karthikeyan, Aryadan Mohammed MLA, V. Sivankutty MLA, Supreme Court advocate Keerti Singh, Justice D. Sreedevi, KMSS state programme director Seema Bhasker and Lida Jacob were among those who spoke at the function.
