Kozhikode: The District Principal Sessions Court here on Wednesday awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.25,000 to Abdul Rashid, 29, for raping a Dalit woman at Thachompoyil in the district six years ago.
Judge M.P. Ismail found Abdul Rashid, 29, guilty of raping the woman while she was returning home from Punoorpuzha on August 12, 2004. Abdul Rashid was found guilty under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused will have to undergo an additional year in prison if he fails to remit the penalty.
