Protect seniority, say teachers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Teachers unions have requested the State government to retain the service, seniority, benefits and salary scale of high school teachers who are likely to face reversion to lower posts with the implementation of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act under which classes from one to eight have been included under elementary education. While many States follow Centres pattern of classifying elementary education up to standard eight, in Kerala standard eight falls in high school section.

With the implementation of the Act the State will have to follow the Central pattern. So, number of posts in the high school section will fall. The government will have to retain the teachers seniority and benefits, said Kerala School Teachers Association general secretary C. Usman.
