New Commissioner of Police takes charge

Kozhikode: P. Vijayan, who assumed charge as new Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, on Wednesday, brings with him a wealth of experience in policing.

The outgoing Commissioner S. Sreejith, who has been promoted as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department, Thiruvananthapuram, handed over the charge to him.

Mr. Vijayan, who hails from the city, belongs to the 1999 IPS batch of the Kerala cadre. He began his IPS career as Kanhangad Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mattancherry Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kasaragod Superintendent of Police and Commandant of Kerala Armed Police (KAP) I and V battalions.

He also had a stint as Superintendent of Police, Thiruvananthapuram (Rural); Commissioner of Police, Kochi city from 2005 to 2007; Superintendent of Police, Malappuram; Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam (Rural). and later SP, Crime Branch CID, Ernakulam, his most recent posting.

Mr. Vijayan has been instrumental in nabbing the accused who looted cash and jewellery from the Chelembra branch of the South Malabar Gramin Bank on December 31, 2007.

His wife, M. Beena, is Ernakulam District Collector.
