Revise norms for calamity aid: VS

Thiruvananthapuram:Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has urged the Central government to revise the criteria for determining the compensation for States affected by natural disasters.

Addressing a function organised by the Revenue Department here on Monday to release the Kerala state policy on disaster management and district disaster management plans, he called on the Centre to adopt a scientific approach to disaster management and ensure timely assistance to States to help them tide over the impact of natural disasters.

Case of lightning

He said the criteria adopted by the Centre for compensating the damage caused by natural disasters were thoroughly unscientific.

Lightning strikes claim several lives every year, yet the Centre does not accept this as a natural disaster, he said.

The Chief Minister said it was unfortunate that an all-party delegation had to leave for the Centre every time a natural disaster occurred in the State.
