Laha Gopalan, who led one of Kerala\'s prolonged land rights struggles by Dalits and depressed sections at Chengara near here, was yesterday arrested and remanded in a cheating case.
Gopalan, president of \'Sadhujana Vimochana Samyuktha Vedi\', allegedly cheated a person from whom he had received money on promise of arranging some land for him, police said.
The arrest triggered protests by the Vedi workers in front of the police station here demanding his release.
He was produced in the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court and remanded to judicial custody.
Gopalan and his supporters had led a land rights agitation by encroaching an estate at Chengara which lasted about two years. The agitation was settled a few months back with the state government promising to take steps to provide land for Dalits and other depressed sections.
