Road safety measures yet to yield
The absence of mandatory road markings and sign boards, haphazard parking, slack rule enforcement, overspeeding and poor coordination between Government departments in enhancing road infrastructure, have made driving in the city a difficult proposition. The recent observance of two road safety awareness campaigns sponsored by the Central and State Governments has brought about little improvement in the situation. Even important decisions taken at District Road Safety Council meetings held over a year ago have not been implemented, because of inadequate follow-up action and insufficient funds, said a senior official in the Motor Vehicles Department. An example is the delay in relocating the transformer at Jos Junction that obstructs the free-left turn towards the DH Ground.
