BSNL launching WiMax in Ernakulam today

KOCHI: Charta Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will launch its mobile WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), a fourth-generation technology that enables high-speed wireless Internet access, in Ernakulam on Saturday. This is the first launch of BSNL WiMax service in South India. The WiMax-based solution is set up and deployed like cellular systems using base stations with coverage over a radius of several kilometres. The customer premise equipment (CPE) will connect the base station to the customer. WiMax subscriber units are available in both indoor and outdoor versions. While indoor units are comparable in size to a cable modem, outdoor units comprise an external antenna and related equipment. A USB dongle-type CPE is also available for use with laptops. There will be 900 base transceiver stations (BTS), set up in two phases, for the deployment of the technology for blanket coverage across the State. The first phase envisages 450 BTS, which will cover major cities, all district headquarters and important towns.
