More funds for Vizhinjam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The much-delayed Vizhinjam project in the capital city has had a fresh infusion of government funds, with the budget for 2010-11 earmarking Rs.125 crore more for this scheme.

A global tender will the invited for the construction of the port and for associated activities, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said in his budget speech on Friday.

There will be a special scheme for the restoration of the Veli and Akkualm lakes. The 25-crore scheme - to be implemented with Central assistance - involves dredging of the lakes and establishing a sewage treatment plant. The Travancore-Shoranur canal will also be renovated under this scheme.

The capital city development programme has been allocated Rs.10.5 crore. The construction of modern slaughterhouses will get a budgetary support of Rs.13 crore. The Attukal Temple Township Scheme will be started this year.
