THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government nominated former Supreme Court judge K T Thomas as its representative in the empowered committee on Mullaperiyar set up by the apex court to resolve the long-pending dispute with Tamil Nadu.
This was announced by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan in a post-cabinet briefing here.
The Supreme Court last month had decided to constitute a five-member empowered committee to examine various aspects of the Mullaperiyar dam. The court also asked both Tamil Nadu and Kerala to nominate one member each to the committee.
The states are locked in a bitter tussle over the dam located in Idduki district. Though located in Kerala, the dam caters to the irrigation and drinking water needs of Tamil Nadu.
Kerala, citing safety of the dam, wants to demolish the existing structure and construct a new one at an alternative location which Tamil Nadu is opposed to.
