THIRUVARUR: Nine Malayali pilgrims of a family were killed and four others injured when a Scorpio van in which they were travelling hit a parked lorry carrying gravel at Ammaiyappan village near here on Thursday at 5.30 am.
The injured were admitted to the Tiruvarur Government Hospital and Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.
There were altogether 13 people inside the van. They hail from Ernakulam and they were en route to Velankanni in Nagapattinam district when the accident occurred.
The deceased were identified as Thengassery Josephs wife Shiny (29), her children Shan Joseph (12) and Sona Joseph (10), Joseph�s uncle Kurien (70), Kurien�s wife Thankamma (58) their daughter�s husband Mathews (38), Mathew�s son Derin (6), Kurien�s cousin Leela (48) and her son Renju (26).
Those injured are Joseph, Laimi, their son Ann Mathew (one and a half years old) and Kurien�s son Aby.
Tiruvarur taluk police have registered a case.
