KOCHI: The Kothamangalam diocese of the Catholic Church observed a day of prayer and fasting on Sunday in the wake of the attack on a professor of Newman College, Thodupuzha, last week.
Catholics under the diocese spent the day after the Sunday Mass in prayers and fasting, said a spokesman of the diocese.
He said the Catholics and the clergy took out silent marches in various parts of the diocese on Sunday as part of the days observations.
Copies of a resolution passed by the diocese were sent to the Chief Minister, the Home Minister and the Education Minister, the spokesman said.
The resolution expressed anxiety about the developments, which, it said, appeared to have acquired communal colours.
A circular read out during the Mass on Sunday at the parishes recalled that the issue for which the professor was suspended was an unfortunate one and it would have hurt religious sentiments.
However, he was immediately suspended from service and the law was taking its course.
