New crematorium to be set up at Thrikkakara soon

Kochi: The city may have some 14 or so crematoria, but very few which are sensitively designed and hygienic. In this context, the Rotary Club of Cochin Midtown will replace the crematorium at Thrikkakara panchayat with a modern one on a budget of Rs 3 crore. Ernakulam Karayogam will manage the new crematorium once it becomes functional. The work is expected to begin in two months.

�The Thrikkakara Panchayat has been gracious enough to grant us permission to construct the crematorium at 80 cents of land. The crematorium, designed by Ahmadabad-based architect Gurjeet Matharoo, will also have a meditation centre and a funeral home.

It will have a built-up area of 10,000 sq ft and it will have a capacity to incinerate three dead bodies at a time, said Georgekutty Kariyanappally, club president and the project chairman.

The club plans to raise the amount required for construction by collecting a minimum of Rs 2,000 from an individual contributor. �A wall for social change, to be raised near the crematorium, will bear the names of patrons,� said Mr. Kariyanapappally.

He also said that cremating bodies was becoming increasingly acceptable among people across religions.
