Devotees throng Mangaladevi temple on Chitrapournami

KATTAPPANA: Thousands of devotees from the State and the neighbouring Tamil Nadu thronged the Mangaladevi temple inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, near Kumily, on the occasion of Chitrapournami festival on Wednesday.

The temple, believed to have been built over a thousand years ago, opens only once a year, on the Chitrapournami day. To reach the temple, devotees have to travel over 15 km from Kumily through the forest. Only trip jeeps and taxis are allowed to take devotees to the temple.

The temple opened at 6 a.m. and closed at 5 p.m. Pujas were offered by priests from Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Heavy rush was witnessed from early morning and the entry at Kumily was closed at 3.30 p.m.
