Panchayat ward to grow paddy for Onam

KOLLAM: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran will inaugurate the upland paddy cultivation scheme �A measure of rice for Onam in Ward number 16 of the Kulashekarapuram panchayat in Karunagapally taluk in the district on Saturday.

The scheme is being implemented by the Kulashekarapuram Krishi Bhavan and the panchayat.

Agricultural officer V.R. Binesh said the scheme was being implemented in 101.17 hectares and more than 10,000 kg of the Uma variety of paddy seed was being distributed for the purpose.

He said every family in the ward had a stake in the scheme. Apart from the traditional paddy fields in the area, fields lying fallow and land belonging to various schools and places of worship were being brought under the scheme. Kudumbasree members would lead the scheme. The ward had been divided into 10 clusters.

Mr. Binesh said the harvest would enable all families in the ward to enjoy their Onam meal with the rice cultivated under the scheme.

The primary aim of the scheme was to get the ward declared a total paddy cultivation ward
