Probe on into train food poisoning incident

Kozhikode: The Railway police here have started investigation into the food poisoning case aboard the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Duronto Express.

Cases have been registered under Section 273 (sale of noxious food or drink) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 153 (endangering safety of person travelling by railway by wilful act) of the Indian Railway Act against the contractor and workers of the pantry car of the train and officials of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Ltd.

The samples of the food served to passengers on the train have been sent for chemical examination. The results are awaited, the police said.

Nineteen passengers, including eight children, were admitted to Government General Hospital here on Monday after they complained of nausea and stomach ache.

At least 30 passengers developed symptoms of food poisoning. They had taken non-vegetarian food for breakfast, including bread, butter and omelette
