Grant scheme for SC/ST students

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities and Electricity A.K. Balan said in the Assembly on Thursday that the government would draw up a scheme for giving a grant of Rs.5 lakh to students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), studying in foreign educational institutions. Besides, the State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation would sanction soft loans of up to Rs.10 lakh carrying six per cent interest.

The Minister was replying to the demands for grants for welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes and Power. Mr. Balan said the assistance to poor Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe girls for marriage would be increased from Rs.20,000 Rs.25,000. The honorarium of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe promoters would be increased from Rs.2,500 to Rs.3,000. In areas with pre-metric hostels, the honorarium would be Rs.3,500 a month. Monthly stipend of Rs.90 a month would be granted to students belonging to Other Backward Classes.
