KOCHI: The construction of public toilets in the city is likely to begin shortly. Though the Kochi Corporation council had earlier passed the agenda in this regard, the decision could not be given official sanction as council proceedings were disrupted on that day.
The Kochi Mayor had declared the agenda passed at that council meeting without discussion as the Opposition and the ruling fronts clashed over the oppositions demand for a vigilance inquiry into the setting up of the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant. The Mayor had signed the decision to construct the public toilets in the city on Saturday and the work would begin this month, said E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman, Town Planning Standing Committee of the Kochi corporation.
The two agencies which have been selected for setting up the toilet complexes would be asked to set up two sample public comfort stations in the city. According to the understanding reached with the agencies, 17 toilets would be set up in different parts of the city before June, he said.
