THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The decision to operate Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) rail services on the Ernakulam-Kollam-Ernakulam sector on six days a week and mail and express trains announced in the Railway Budget are the highlights of the Railway timetable for the Southern zone that will come into effect from Thursday.
The MEMU services will be operated using eight-car rake and the train will stop at all stations on the stretch, according to the new timetable that was released in Chennai on Wednesday.
The MEMU services will operate on all days except Sunday. The 0356 service from Kollam will leave at 10.05 a.m. to reach Ernakulam at 2.20 p.m. In the return direction, Train No. 0357 will leave Ernakulam at 2.45 p.m. to reach Kollam at 6.40 p.m. However, the date of introducing the MEMU services has not been mentioned by the Railways in the timetable.
Railway sources said the MEMU is likely to be introduced in the last quarter of the financial year as the shed at Kollam is to be commissioned and the rakes have to reach the division.
