Plea against M.V. Jayarajan

KANNUR: Indian Lawyers Congress (ILC) State unit has urged action against Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M.V. Jayarajan for denigrating High Court judges.

ILC State president T. Asaf Ali, in an e-mail, has urged the Registrar-General of the High Court to initiate suo motu action against Mr. Jayarajan under the Contempt of Courts Act 1971 for his reported public statement scandalising and ridiculing judges and judicial institutions while referring to a judgment of a Division Bench of the High Court banning roadside public meetings for road safety reasons. Mr. Ali said the tone and tenor of the statement was highly objectionable and was nothing short of a criminal contempt which warranted action under the contempt of courts rules.

He said the statement of Mr. Jayarajan could not be taken as an isolated one. Unless strong action was taken against those who ridiculed and threatened judges and courts publicly, judges would not be able to deliver justice freely and fearlessly.
