The sad tale of two lakes in Kollam

KOLLAM: The theme of the 47th World Environment Day (WED), which is being observed on June 5, holds much relevance to Kollam district. Two of its prime water sources, Sasthamcotta Lake and Ashtamudi Lake and the scores of freshwater and marine fish species in them, face a bleak future on account of environment degradation. The district has definitely not been complying with the WED theme many species, one planet, one future.

Sasthamcotta, with an area of 4.14 square kilometres is the biggest freshwater lake in the State and Ashtamudi Lake, with an area of 614 square kilometres, the deepest. Both have been listed as Ramsar sites.
