KOCHI: The City Traffic Police have started a special drive ahead of the monsoon as part of an effort to reduce the high incidence of accidents during the season.
Diesel spilled on the road gets frothy during the first couple of rains, making the stretch highly slippery. Hence we get more accident cases during the first few rains, said K.B. Venugopal, Assistant Commissioner of Police, City Traffic (West).
The onset of monsoon and re-opening of schools pose a challenge for the traffic police, in both controlling the sudden increase in traffic volume and disciplining negligent drivers.
During the drive, we focus on lane discipline. We make sure heavy vehicles and two-wheelers stick to the left lane of the highway, while the right one is left free for light vehicles. Similarly, we book vehicles not allowing pedestrians free use of zebra-crossings, said K.S. Baby Vinod, Assistant Commissioner of Police, City Traffic (East).
