Sanitation drive makes progress

KOCHI: The Total Sanitation Mission has spent Rs. 6.81 crore out of the Rs. 7.39 crore allotted by the Union and State governments to make Ernakulam a completely sanitised district during the last four years.

Addressing a press conference in connection with the fourth anniversary celebrations of the State government, Total Sanitation Campaign project coordinator N. Vinodini said that till March, the mission had built 28,669 toilets at a cost of Rs. 3.73 crore for families belonging to the Below Poverty Line with the assistance of the local self-government bodies.

In government schools, Rs. 72.80 lakh was spent on building toilets in proportion to the student strength. More than 300 toilets were built in this manner. Besides, another Rs. 17.25 lakh was spent on constructing 35 girl-friendly toilets, Ms. Vinodini said.
