Taking welfare schemes to the masses

Thiruvananthapuram: People should insist on getting information about the development and welfare activities being implemented by the government, Shashi Tharoor, MP, said here on Tuesday.

Speaking after inaugurating a five-day Bharat Nirman public information campaign at Vellarada near here, he said the success of these programmes depended on the people knowing about them.

District panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan presided over the function.

Various Central and State government organisations have set up 50 stalls at the venue to highlight various welfare schemes and development projects. The Directorate of Field Publicity is organising programmes at 38 villages around Vellarada as part of the campaign.

Later, inaugurating a seminar on welfare of minorities, Kovalam MLA George Mercier exhorted officials to implement welfare programmes with a sense of social obligation.

Lalitha Bai, Under Secretary, presented the theme paper. C.Ashok Kumar, vice-president, Vellarada grama panchayat, presided over the function.
