KOCHI: Ernakulam district panchayat has made plans to bring another 150 hectares of fallow land under paddy cultivation for the ensuing season. But planners still have to grapple with the continuing shortage of workers to harvest season requirements.
Local panchayats like Chellanam, Kottuvally and Edavanakkad are assessing the possibility of using the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) to draft workers for the harvest season even though there is scepticism prevails about its feasibility.
Development Standing Committee Chairman of Ernakulam district panchayat Anil Kanjily said that bringing another 150 hectares of fallow land is an ambitious programme, which would reduce the total land lying fallow in the district to about 20 per cent of the total area available for paddy cultivation.
