Road reopening cuts travel time to Bangalore

KANNUR: The wait is over for passengers in the Kannur-Mysore-Bangalore route. On Saturday, the Makkutta-Virajpet inter-State highway that connects the district with Kodagu (Coorg) in Karnataka was reopened, marking an end to the difficulties faced by those who go to Mysore and Bangalore by road.

Road traffic through this important inter-State highway resumed after the repaired road was reopened by Karnataka Speaker K.G. Boppayya on June 5, nearly 15 months after the road in bad shape was closed for repair works.

In seven hours

Since then vehicles to and from Kannur and Mysore/Bangalore were being diverted through Wayanad, forcing passengers to cover an additional distance of 90 km.

The reopened road offers better connectivity and saves hours of travel time.

Now, passengers from Kannur can reach Bangalore in six or seven hours. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) resumed its daily services to Mysore/Bangalore through the Makkutta ghat road on Sunday.

Passengers from Kozhikode to Mysore/Bangalore, who are hit by the ban on night vehicular traffic through the Bandipore forest in Karnataka, will also benefit.
