Education aid for jail inmates\' children

KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the State government is preparing a special assistance scheme for the education of children of jail inmates.

Inaugurating a surveillance system inside the Central Jail here on Monday, Mr. Balakrishnan said the new scheme was among the various initiatives launched by the government for the welfare of jail inmates. Video-conferencing facilities had been introduced in jails. Eight new sub-jails had established and four more were being set up.

Mr. Balakrishnan said the central jails would only house convicted prisoners. Remand prisoners would be sent to the sub-jails.

He said Rs.154 crore being released by the Finance Commission would be used to reform the jails. Works to solve drinking water scarcity in the jails would be taken up as part of the modernisation activities. The open jail at Cheemeni would be expanded. As many as 90 inmates in the Central Jail here would be transferred to the open jail, the Minister said9
