Kozhikode: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom inaugurated the works on the garden to grow and preserve all species of plants mentioned in Hortus Malabaricus, at Chaliyam in the district on Friday. The Minister also inaugurated the works for a snake park and aquarium proposed there as part of the project, at a function got up as part of the fourth anniversary of the LDF government.
The project was conceived by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department to preserve all the 742 varieties of herbs and plants, mentioned in Hortus Malabaricus (Garden of Malabar) by Hendrik van Rheede, who was the Governor of the Dutch administration in Kochi during 1667-77.
The garden has been named �Hortus Malabaricus Sasya Sarvaswam by a collective of writers and cultural leaders led by M.T. Vasudevan Nair
