Fruit trees planted on Sainik School campus

Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said here on Friday that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme could be effectively utilised for environment protection.

He was speaking after inaugurating a social forestry project to plant fruit tree saplings at the Sainik School, Kazhakoottam. Mr. Kutty said the scheme, apart from generating jobs, should be used to promote projects aimed at national development. Planting trees is a major activity that could be taken up under the scheme, he said. It could help to minimise the impact of climate change on the environment.

The Minister stressed the need to complete the project on time and ensure proper care of the saplings. About 222 acres of the Sainik School campus will be cleared of undergrowth and used to plant fruit trees.

Registered labourers from six gram panchayats under the Kazhakoottam block will get jobs under the project.
