South station to get a facelift

KOCHI: Passengers can expect better amenities at the Ernakulam Junction station since the Railways propose to convert it into a world-class station. The station wears a dreary look now, since the concourse is very narrow, and many platforms do not have even basic amenities and proper lighting.

The parking area too is small. The construction wing of the Railways has for long been demanding more funds for the upkeep of the station and to build a modern station building. Commissioning the sixth platform and taking over the GCDA-owned building on the eastern side would give a new face to the most important station in the district. The station also does not have modern trolleys and attenders to move luggage in bulk.
