State to raise Disaster Response Force

Thiruvananthapuram: The government proposed to raise a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to carry out rescue and relief operations during natural calamities and man-made disasters, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said here on Thursday.

Delivering the inaugural address at a seminar organised in connection with a mass awareness programme on lightning hazards and safety measures, he said the proposed unit would comprise personnel drawn from the Police, Home Guards and Fire and Rescue Services. The proposal had been approved in principle, he said.

The Minister said a unit of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) would start operations in Kozhikode next month. A second NDRF unit, meant for seasonal operations, would be stationed at Peerumed in Idukki district from July.
