Canadian universities planning tie-up with India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India may not yet be the most desired global destination for higher education. But a vibrant economy and the steady economic progress of the country are now attracting students from foreign universities for collaborative programmes, projects and field trips to India.

Priya Sinha, second secretary for advocacy programme at the High Commission of Canada in India, said many universities in Canada were looking forward to launching collaborative education programmes with Indian universities.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of an international conference on India looking homeward: Text performance and culture, Ms. Sinha said apart from students of development studies, humanities and social sciences, science and technical students were also opting India for doing projects and internships.

This is a new trend that we see among the Indian community in Canada. Not just students but Indian expatriates are also now looking homeward for collaborative ventures, starting new businesses, pursuing their interests or just retiring to their home country, she said.

Ms. Sinha and advocacy communications officer at the Canadian High Commission Bernard Francis are in the city to participate in the three-day international conference jointly organised by the Institute of English and the UGC Area Study Centre for Canadian Studies.
