Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has said health workers and voluntary organisations should focus on creating more awareness on the importance of early detection of cancer.
There is a need for opening early cancer detection centres in all districts, he said while giving his inaugural address after laying the foundation stone for the new 10-storey block at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here on Tuesday.
Mr. Achuthanandan urged the Centre to take steps to make cancer drugs affordable to the poor. He said the intervention of the World Health Organisation was imperative to persuade the pharma industry to reduce the drug prices.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of palliative care and the need for starting more such centres as well as for more volunteers to come forward for offering their services in the area.
The new ten-storey block to be constructed at the RCC will add a much needed 1,35,000 sq ft of space, paving the way for more pay/general wards, intensive care units, OP clinics, conference and lecture halls as well as the setting up of PET Scan.
