KOTTAYAM: Shaji N. Karun, noted film maker has welcomed the entry of corporates into the film industry. Participating in a meet-the-press programme, the film maker said arts, culture, science and education should be areas where the big corporates should bring in their funds earmarked for corporate social responsibility.
Referring to the funding of cinemas, he pointed out that most these films made by corporates were low-budget enterprises which proved to be remunerative for the producers.
He said his corporate funded Malayalam movie, Kuttisrank will be released in April.
Reacting to another question, he said he was not happy with the current situation where the Indian cinema was not making a mark in the Asian section in international festivals. Smaller industries like that of China, Korea, Thailand and even Vietnam, were making their presence, he pointed. In spite of the controversial political and religious characteristic of the nation, Iran as a film industry was being keenly observed the world over, he said.
The film maker believed that in spite of the fact that Kerala had attained cent per literacy, the contribution of Malayalam cinema industry to the intellectual realm of cinema was of a very low order. However, good number of good films were being made in languages like Marathi, Oriya and Tamil , he said.
