Karat seeks comprehensive probe into IPL

KOCHI: The CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said IPL was a sordid profiteering big-business enterprise in the name of cricket. He said the allegations raised were too serious and that an investigation by a joint parliamentary committee would be ideal.

Contending that the standing down of Shashi Tharoor or Lalit Modi would not address the issues thrown up by the IPL controversy, Karat has called for a comprehensive investigation into the sordid profiteering big-business enterprise in the name of cricket.

Commenting on the statement made by Tharoor that he was only trying to bring cricket to Kerala, Karat said IPL model of cricket was not Kerala or Kochi needs. He also noted that the IPL model was not a worthwhile model for cricket and I wont regret that IPL Kochi in the present form does not take place. When the report of the investigation was ready, it would be clear how the ground rules for the tournament could be framed, he said.
