World Cup set to send television sales through the roof

With less than three weeks left for one of the biggest sporting events in the world to get under way in the far away Africa, footballs fans in the city are gearing up to spend a month-long of sleepless nights glued to television sets even though their own country will not be anywhere near the scene.

Gauging the mood, companies dealing in television are busy giving final touches to their tantalising offers and building up stock levels to transform that excitement into windfall sales.

Football World Cup records the biggest sales next only to Onam. The sale is expected to go up by two to three times during the World Cup, said V.A. Ajmal, managing director of an outlet selling electronic appliances in the city.

Already, some popular brands have come out with attractive World Cup offers like scratch cards with assured gifts, while others are in the process of finalising their offers. We are yet to decide on our offers like whether it should be an exchange offer to replace old television sets with new ones or scratch cards or something else. A clear picture should evolve within a couple of days, said Vinod Kumar, zonal head of a popular company. He, however, has no doubt that whatever be the nature of the offers, sales during the World Cup would go up by three to four times.
