Cabinet clears block reorganisation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet has given the go-ahead to reorganise the block panchayats and upgrade Karunagapally, Thrikkakara, Eloor, Maradu, Kottakkal, Nilambur and Neeleswaram grama panchayats as municipalities.

Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty said in an official release here on Wednesday that the Cabinet approved the proposal to merge Nattakom and Kumaranelloor panchayats with Kottayam Municipality, Thiruvankulam with Thrippunithura, Pookode and Thycaud with Guruvayur, Porathissery with Irinjalakuda and Methala with Kodungallor.

The Cabinet decided to merge Sreekariyam, Vattiyoorkavu, Kudappanakunnu, Vizhinjam and Kazhakuttom with Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and Elathur, Cheruvannur-Nallalam and Beypore with Kozhikode Corporation.

A tribal panchayat, Idamalakuddy, will be formed by bifurcating Munnar panchayat. The number of panchayats will come down from 999 to 978. Thiruvananthapuram rural block panchayat will cease to exist following the merger of panchayats with Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
