Planting drives mark World Environment Day

Thiruvananthapuram: A variety of programmes involving different sections of society marked World Environment Day programmes in the city on Saturday.

The District Information Office organised a function and seminar at the Vellanad block panchayat. District panchayat vice-president B.P. Murali inaugurated. Saplings were planted to mark the district-level inauguration of the Akshara Vriksham project.

N. Sakthan, MLA, inaugurated a district-level tree-planting programme under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). District panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan presided over the function held at Maranelloor. A painting competition was also organised.

J. Arundhati, MLA, inaugurated the planting of bamboo trees along the banks of the Vamanapuram river. The project will be taken up under the employment guarantee programme. As many as 1.5 lakh saplings are to be planted under the scheme this week.
