Migrant worker held on murder charge

KOTTAYAM: The police have arrested a 25-year-old migrant labourer from West Bengal in connection with the murder of an 80-year-old lady at Kidnagoor on Thursday.

According to the police, Mariamma, wife of the late Mathan of Kumbanamkunnu near Kidnagoor, who was staying with her sister had gone to the neighbours house to inquire about power failure, by 4 p.m. While she was returning, she passed through the camp where nine migrant labourers from West Bengal, working for a rubber nursery, were staying. One of them, Mohammed Shukur Ali, allegedly came near her inquiring about the jackfruit on the tree near the camp.

When the old lady stopped to answer him, he slashed the ladys throat with the knife he was holding, and spirited away the jewellery she was wearing.
