Court restrains Railways from cutting trees

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has restrained the Railways from felling or cutting the branches of the trees standing in the Aluva Railway station compound.

The Bench comprising Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice P.S. Gopinathan passed the interim order on a writ petition filed by S. Seetharaman, secretary of the Association for Environment Protection.

According to the petitioner, the Railway authorities had decided to fell four big trees standing in the railway station compound without getting mandatory sanction from the forest department.

Trees were important for the environment because of their ability to absorb greenhouse gases.
