Welfare schemes to be integrated

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and Minister for Social Welfare P.K. Sreemathy will meet along with officials of both the departments next week to initiate the integration of welfare schemes for families of prisoners and ex-prisoners.

A welfare fund would also be set up for the purpose, Mr. Balakrishnan said here on Wednesday. He was speaking after inaugurating a rehabilitation scheme for ex-prisoners organised by the Department of Social Welfare. Twenty persons were given demand drafts of Rs.10,000 each as part of this rehabilitation package.

A crime affects two families; that of the perpetrator and that of the victim. It is important that the children from such affected families do not turn to crime due to adverse circumstances. The government has instituted welfare schemes in a bid to dissuade people from taking to crime.
