Early warning system launched

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The early warning system for disasters and VHF-based communication system set up at a cost of Rs.3 crore linking the Secretariat, Land Revenue Commissionerate, 14 district collectorates, 63 taluks and 200 villages in the State was commissioned by Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran here on Friday.

Addressing a function in this connection at the Civil Station at Kudappanakkunnu here, Mr. Rajendran said all villages in the State would be covered in the second phase of the project.

Increasing number of deaths due to natural disasters like lightning and cyclone was a matter of concern. Twenty persons were killed in lightning these summer months. Of this, 10 were killed in Pathanamthitta district alone. The Minister said the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services had been strengthened to meet any challenge.
